Ondo Government threatens illegal monarchs with life imprisonment

Anybody who proclaimes himself an Oba and wears an unauthorised crown in Ondo State now risks life imprisonment.

That’s according to the state Government who warned kingmakers against producing self-acclaimed monarchs in contravention of laid down due process of selection, approval, installation and presentation of Instrument of Appointment and Staff of Office.


The State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu issued the warning at the presentation of the instrument of appointment and Staff of Office to two monarchs in Okitipupa and Ilaje local government areas.

Represented by the Vommissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, warned that his administration would not allow obaship crisis disturb the relative peace in the state, adding that government would deal with any Prince, Ruling House or kingmakers who flouted the order out of self-aggrandizement.

He however urged the new monarchs to see their appointments as a divine call to serve their people, but he warned them to exercise restraint in the use of their authorities and powers.

The Governor also warned the traditional rulers to exercise their authority within their domains to avoid unnecessary crisis.
