Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues,

As, we commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, a day dedicated to acknowledging the unique challenges faced by girls worldwide and celebrating their potential to lead and inspire; it’s a call to action for all of us to champion their rights and empower them to thrive.

As we reflect on the theme of this year’s commemoration, let us first recognize the progress that has been made. In many parts of the world, girls are breaking barriers in education, sports, science, and politics. They are challenging stereotypes, advocating for change, and demonstrating incredible resilience. Yet, we cannot ignore the harsh realities that many girls still endure: discrimination, violence, and limited access to education and health care.

According to UNICEF, over 130 million girls are out of school, and millions more face early marriage, teen pregnancy, and gender-based violence.

These challenges not only impact the lives of girls but also hinder the development of our societies. When girls are educated and empowered, entire communities flourish. When girls succeed, we pave the way for a brighter future for all.

I therefore urge each one of us to renew our commitment to supporting girls in our communities. Let us strive to be advocates for their rights, ensuring they have access to quality education and health services. It is our responsibility to create environments where girls can dream big, take risks, and pursue their aspirations without fear of judgment or discrimination.

To the educators in our midst: Your role is paramount. You are the mentors and role models who can inspire girls to realize their potential. Foster inclusive classrooms that celebrate diversity and encourage every girl to speak up and participate. Let us empower them with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the complexities of the world.

To the health professionals: Your work in promoting girls’ health is critical. Let’s ensure that we provide comprehensive health education and services that cater specifically to the needs of girls. This includes mental health support, reproductive health education, and the resources necessary for them to make informed choices about their bodies and futures.

To the community leaders and advocates (NGOs): You have the power to influence policy and create systemic change. Advocate for laws and policies that protect girls from violence and discrimination, and promote initiatives that support their education and empowerment. Let us work together to break down the barriers that stand in their way.

As we celebrate the strength and determination of girls today, let us also acknowledge the responsibility we hold in shaping a future where every girl has the opportunity to thrive.
