AAUA’s 42nd Inaugural Lecture to focus on sustainable education financing

Professor Akinrotimi Iyiomo Oyetakin, a distinguished academic in Educational Management, will deliver the 42nd Inaugural Lecture of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), addressing the financial complexities confronting tertiary education in Nigeria and beyond.

This was contained in a statement signed by Professor Adebisi Daramola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the Ceremonies Committee.

The event is scheduled for Tuesday, 17 June 2025, at the University Multipurpose Hall by 2:00 p.m., with guests expected to be seated by 1:30 p.m. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olugbenga Ige, is expected to chair the lecture.

Titled “Cost Explosion and Expenditure Implosion in Tertiary Education: Equilibrium Heresies in Motion”, the lecture will critically examine the widening gap between the rising costs of education and the declining levels of public and institutional spending—a paradox Professor Oyetakin identifies as one of the key barriers to sustainable human capital development in Africa.

Professor Oyetakin’s academic journey began with a National Certificate in Education (NCE) from Lagos State College of Education, Oto-Ijanikin, in 1990. He later earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics Education from Lagos State University in 1998, and proceeded to obtain both a Master of Education and a PhD in Educational Management from the same institution in 2000 and 2009, respectively.

He joined the services of AAUA in 2010 as Lecturer II in the Department of Educational Management, rising through the academic ranks to become a Professor in 2022. In addition to his teaching and research roles, he has served in several academic and administrative capacities, including multiple terms as Head of Department, Coordinator of Departmental Seminars and Journals, and Acting Director of the Institute of Education.

His influence extends beyond the university. Professor Oyetakin has presented papers and facilitated sessions at academic conferences in Italy, Tanzania, Kenya, Lebanon, and across Nigeria. He is the author, co-author, or editor of over 59 scholarly publications, contributing to both local and international academic debates on education, leadership, and institutional reform.

He is also an active member of several professional bodies, including the Nigerian Association for Educational Administration and Planning (NAEAP), the Commonwealth Council for Educational Administration and Management (CCEAM), the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), and the Teaching and Education Research Association (TERA), UK. His scholarly service includes editorial roles with numerous academic journals, affirming his leadership in shaping educational discourse.

The forthcoming lecture is expected to attract academics, education policymakers, development partners, students, and members of the public. It promises to offer critical insights into the sustainability of higher education financing, the need for policy recalibration, and the imperative for institutional accountability.
