JABU has personnel, facilities to accommodate more nursing students – VC

….Asks Nursing Council to increase university’s admission quota

The Vice Chancellor of Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ikeji-Arakeji, Osun State, Prof. Olasebikan Fakolujo, has appealed to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to increase the institution’s admission quota for Nursing Science.

Prof. Fakolujo made the appeal during the second professional induction ceremony of JABU’s 79 Nursing Science graduates into the Nursing and Midwifery Council, held at the Oba Olashore Auditorium of the university.

Out of the 79 graduands, 10 bagged First Class.

The Vice Chancellor said the institution has adequate facilities, qualified personnel and a strong commitment to delivering quality education, which would enable it to accommodate more students and contribute significantly to bridging Nigeria’s shortage of nurses and midwives.

The VC congratulated the inductees and commended both academic and non-teaching staff of the College of Health Sciences for their tireless dedication in training competent, disciplined and compassionate professionals.

Prof. Fakolujo urged the new nurses to be good ambassadors of the institution. He reemphasised the commitment of the university to producing globally competitive graduates not only in nursing but also other fields.

The Dean of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Adio Folayan, reminded the new nurses of their critical role in the healthcare system. He said their expertise would be vital in providing compassionate care, preventing illness, promoting health and improving patient outcomes.

While encouraging them to embrace lifelong learning, uphold integrity and remain steadfast in their professional calling, he advised them to “make meaningful contributions to your communities, mentor others and advance healthcare delivery in Nigeria”.

Also speaking, the Acting Head of the Department of Nursing Science, Basil Nnamdi, said the graduands had been trained with a curriculum that meets global best practices, complemented with clinical postings in reputable hospitals to provide practical and hands-on experience.

He commended the university management for its consistent support, noting that the department had recorded outstanding performances in examinations. He further disclosed that the department continues to strengthen collaborations with health institutions, research initiatives and professional bodies to give students a competitive edge in their careers.

Highpoint of the event was the oath taking and induction of the new nursing scientists by Dr Ndagi Alhassan, the Registrar and Chief Executive of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

Dr. Alhassan who was represented by the Dean, School of Nursing Science, Babcock University, Ilisha-Remo, Ogun State, Prof. Christiana Sowunmi told the graduands to consider themselves fortunate to have gone through nursing school and to be inducted immediately, an opportunity which he noted was not available during his own time.
