Ondo stakeholders set to celebrate Older Persons Day with awards, lecture

The 2025 International Day of Older Persons will be marked in Akure on Monday, 6th October, with a series of activities highlighting the contributions and welfare of senior citizens in Ondo State.

The event organised by the Ondo State Stakeholders on Ageing, a chapter of the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), will take place at the First Baptist Church, Oba Adesida Road, Akure, beginning at 11 a.m.

A major highlight of this year’s celebration is the maiden edition of the Ondo State Older Persons Award, which will honour two distinguished indigenes of the state for their outstanding contributions to the welfare of the elderly in diverse ways.

The programme will also feature a public lecture to be delivered by a physician gerontologist, alongside a medical outreach, health talks and performances by the Ondo State Cultural Troupe, as well as other musical displays to entertain participants and guests.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr Bosede Osamaye, and the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Adesoji Afolabi, are expected as Special Guests of Honour at the event.

Speaking ahead of the celebration, Co-Chair of the Ondo State NSCC Stakeholders Consultative Forum on Ageing, Chief Ade Ayeni said the event would not only celebrate the elderly but also raise awareness on their needs and rights, while promoting policies that improve their well-being.
