FUTA matriculates 6,800 students as VC reaffirms commitment to academic excellence

The Federal University of Technology, Akure has matriculated newly admitted undergraduate and postgraduate students into its various academic programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session, with the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research and training.

The matriculation ceremony, held on Thursday saw a total of 6,000 undergraduate and 821 postgraduate students take the matriculation oath.

Addressing the matriculants, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oladiji described their admission as a product of a rigorous and highly competitive process, urging them to appreciate the privilege of being selected.

“Your admission into FUTA, after a rigorous and highly competitive selection process, is a clear affirmation of your potential for excellence. Today’s ceremony is a culmination of thorough admission processes,” she said.

Professor Oladiji explained that postgraduate admissions were based on candidates’ eligibility and availability of supervisors, while undergraduate admissions followed eligibility requirements and approved quotas for the university and its programmes.

“Out of over 20,000 candidates that applied, about 6,000 candidates were admitted. Statistically, almost half of the candidates who aspired to enter FUTA in this academic session were screened off. The new intakes should therefore understand how fortunate they are,” she added.

Reiterating the university’s policy on discipline, the Vice Chancellor warned students against acts capable of undermining their academic pursuits and future careers.

“By taking the matriculation oath today, you are entering into a solemn covenant with this institution. You are pledging to pursue knowledge with integrity; to maintain discipline and conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of FUTA,” she said.

She stressed that the university maintains zero tolerance for misconduct, including examination malpractice, plagiarism, cultism, sexual harassment, indecent dressing, cybercrime, drug abuse and other anti-social behaviours, warning that any violation would attract severe sanctions.

Professor Oladiji further assured the students of a conducive learning and research environment, particularly for postgraduate programmes, noting that measures were being implemented to reduce cases of dropouts and programme abandonment.

“The University Management is putting everything in place to ensure hitch-free postgraduate programmes. Efforts at making the teaching and research environment very conducive will be continuous because excellence is a never-ending journey,” she stated.

She told the students that FUTA remains a centre of excellence in technological education, research and innovation, urging them to take advantage of the institution’s academic resources and mentorship opportunities.

Speaking on the university’s achievements, the Vice Chancellor noted that FUTA is a research-intensive institution with about 300 professors across diverse disciplines, a well-equipped central laboratory, and strong academic collaborations with local and international institutions and government agencies.

She encouraged the students to familiarise themselves with university regulations and seek guidance from experienced academics and administrators whenever necessary.

The matriculation oath was subsequently administered by the Registrar of the university, Mr Charles Adeleye.
