Borno: Zulum Approves increase in allowances for CJTF, vigilantes, others,

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved an upward review of monthly allowances for volunteers under the Borno Youth Empowerment Scheme, including members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), Vigilantes, Hunters and the Neighbourhood Watch.

The revised allowance increases individual monthly payments from ₦30,000 to ₦50,000, while leaders of the volunteer groups will now receive ₦150,000 each, resulting in a total monthly financial commitment of ₦232.4 million by the state government.

The approval was disclosed in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dauda Iliya, who said the reviewed allowances have already begun reflecting in beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

According to the statement, the adjustment reflects the state government’s recognition of the vital role played by the volunteer groups in supporting security operations and safeguarding communities across Borno State.

Since assuming office in 2019, Governor Zulum has progressively reviewed the volunteers’ stipends, increasing the allowance from ₦15,000 to ₦20,000, and later to ₦30,000. The latest increase, which takes effect from January 2026, is aimed at addressing prevailing economic conditions, rising living costs and the heightened risks associated with their duties.

“The Civilian Joint Task Force, Vigilantes, Hunters and Neighbourhood Watch have consistently demonstrated gallantry, resilience and deep commitment in the fight against Boko Haram insurgents,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.

It added that 45 leaders of the various volunteer groups would benefit from the enhanced leadership allowance.

The volunteer groups have been instrumental in complementing the efforts of the Nigerian military and other security agencies, including the arrest of insurgent commanders and the provision of intelligence that has helped prevent attacks and protect lives and property in several communities.

Governor Zulum commended the volunteers for their courage and sacrifice and urged them to maintain discipline, professionalism and close collaboration with security agencies as the state continues efforts to restore lasting peace, stability and development.
