Ondo government pledges support for ACSPN on media literacy, capacity building

The Ondo State Government has pledged its support for the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN) in advancing media literacy, as well as the training and retraining of media practitioners to meet emerging realities in the media landscape.

The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the Ondo State leadership of ACSPN, led by its State Coordinator, Sunday Kolawole, to the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku.

Speaking while receiving the delegation, Ajanaku reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to strengthening the efficiency of media practitioners and collaborating with organisations whose objectives align with the development of the information sector.

He noted that capacity building remains central to sustaining professionalism in journalism, stressing that continuous training provides the intellectual foundation required for credible and responsible media practice.

“Journalism is strengthened by the intellectual backbone provided through training, and I am delighted that this is what your association stands for. It is therefore a delight to receive you as part of the information and communication firmament of Ondo State. We will collaborate with ACSPN in every way to mutually benefit both Ondo State and the association,” Ajanaku said.

Also speaking, the Administrative Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Orientation, Lanre Akarakiri, commended the establishment of ACSPN in Ondo State, expressing confidence that the association’s activities would help address media illiteracy and curb the growing trend of quackery threatening professional journalism.

Earlier, Kolawole outlined the goals and objectives of the association, which include promoting continuous media training and strengthening collaboration between communication scholars and media professionals to enhance the quality of information dissemination.

He also disclosed plans by the association to organise a Media Development Dialogue later in the year, aimed at bringing together key stakeholders to deliberate on critical issues affecting the media sector.

Kolawole expressed appreciation to the state government for its openness to collaboration, noting that sustained engagement between government and professional bodies remains vital to building a credible and responsible media environment.
