Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has raised concerns over reports that the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), led by NSA Nuhu Ribadu, procured about 10 kilograms of Thallium Sulphate, reportedly sourced from a supplier in Poland.
El-Rufai made the allegations in a letter to ONSA, seeking clarification on the procurement and expressing concerns about public safety and accountability.
He requested details on the intended purpose and end-use of the chemical, the identity of the supplier, whether the import was conducted under a chemical or defence permit, the total quantity and concentration, as well as storage and security measures.
He also asked about regulatory oversight and coordination with agencies such as NAFDAC, NCDC, and other public-health and environmental bodies, noting the importance of risk assessment and hazard-mitigation plans given the compound’s extreme toxicity.
In his letter, El-Rufai stated, “I want to stress that this inquiry is made in good faith, solely to ensure that due processes, safety standards, and transparency are observed. Public confidence in the integrity of national institutions is strengthened when potential risks are openly addressed and managed.”
On X, he added, “It’s a matter of concern if anyone brings in any poison, more so an odourless, colourless one.”
The former governor’s inquiry comes amid heightened public scrutiny of chemical and defence procurements, and the need for transparency in sensitive national security operations.
